Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral
Information as of 8 November 2026. The pages of the organiser (koelnerweihnachtsmarkt.com), of the City of Cologne and of the Cathedral Chapter (koelner-dom.de) are binding. We are an independent site and belong neither to the market nor to the cathedral.
The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom – the Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral, as its organiser calls it – runs in 2026 from Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December on Roncalliplatz in front of the cathedral; it is closed on Totensonntag (the Protestant day of remembrance for the dead, the Sunday before Advent), 22 November. The organiser is KW Kölner Weihnachtsgesellschaft mbH; the market’s motto is “Markt der Herzen” (market of hearts).1 In March 2026 the City of Cologne awarded it the contract for the years 2026 to 2030.2

A note on the weekday: on its home page the organiser gives Tuesday (“Di”) for 23 December 2026; 23 December 2026 is, however, a Wednesday.1
According to the organiser, there are more than 120 stalls on the square with crafts, gifts and food and drink; every year the stage under the tent of lights hosts more than 100 free events, plus a children’s programme.1 The 2026 stage programme starts on 16 November; the official opening is listed for 17 November at 19:00.3

According to the organiser there has been no printed leaflet since 2022, only a PDF to download and signs with a QR code on the market.5
Where the market is
The market stands on Roncalliplatz (address according to the organiser: Roncalliplatz 1, 50667 Köln), about 50 metres in a straight line from the cathedral.6,
Getting there in Advent
The organiser recommends coming by bus and train; the nearest KVB stop is Dom/Hbf (light rail 5, 16 and 18, bus 172 and 173), and Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) is right next to the cathedral.6,
For the 2026 Advent season, the City of Cologne has published rules for car traffic:12
- Deutzer Brücke: On the Advent Saturdays 28 November, 5, 12 and 19 December 2026, between 11:00 and 20:00, the city diverts traffic heading into the city centre before the bridge towards the Severinsbrücke. Cyclists and pedestrians are not affected.
- Riverside and Heumarkt car park: From 26 November to 23 December 2026, access via Markmannsgasse is closed between 10:00 and 22:00.
- Park and ride: If you drive to the car parks at the LANXESS arena in Deutz or the underground car park at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring on these four Saturdays between 09:00 and 16:00, up to five people travel free on buses and trains within Cologne; the parking ticket serves as proof.
- Shuttle from trade fair car park P22: From 26 November to 23 December 2026, free shuttle buses run daily between 10:00 and 22:00 from car park P22 in Deutz to Heumarkt, without a fixed timetable. They are intended for coach groups; according to the city, at weekends you can also leave your car in the Messeparkhaus Zoobrücke at P22 and use the shuttle.13,
12
The city expects many visitors from out of town during Advent, and particularly many on Saturdays.12,
Luggage and checks at the cathedral
If you go from the market into the cathedral, expect bag and security checks at the entrance; only small bags and day rucksacks up to 40 × 35 × 15 cm are allowed, wheeled suitcases and trolleys are not – and they cannot be left in the cathedral either.14 Under the cathedral’s house rules (Domordnung), food and drink are to be consumed outside the cathedral, so eat and drink whatever you buy at the market before you go in.15 More on the size limits: Luggage.
Which bags may be taken onto the market itself is not stated by the organiser (checked on 8 November 2026).
Accessibility and toilets
The organiser gives no information on the accessibility of the market area or on toilets at the market (checked on 8 November 2026). For the cathedral: according to the Cathedral Chapter, the interior and the Cathedral Treasury are accessible, and wheelchair users reach the Domplatte, the raised plaza in front of the cathedral, via the Domgässchen.16,
Right by the cathedral, according to Deutsche Bahn, is the city-run “Toilette Dom” on the south side of the Domkloster (Domkloster 4, daily 08:00–21:00, €0.50; the accessible toilet is free with the Euro-Schlüssel, a standard key for accessible toilets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland).17 More toilets at Cologne Central Station and step-free arrival: Accessibility.
Visiting the cathedral in Advent
The Cathedral Chapter gives no separate opening hours for the market period; the usual ones apply: the cathedral is usually open 06:00–20:00, the free entrance for prayer in the north transept usually until 20:00 from Monday to Friday and usually until 18:15 on Saturdays and Sundays; for sightseeing usually daily 10:00–17:45, and on Sundays and church holidays 13:30–16:30. During services the cathedral is fully or partly closed to sightseeing.18,
- Services: on weekdays Mass at 06:30, 07:15, 08:00, 09:00 and 18:30, on Sundays at 07:00, 08:30, 10:00, 12:00 and 18:30 (as of 8 November 2026).19 Attending Mass is described under Attending a service.
- Praying without a ticket: The north transept, on the side facing Cologne Central Station, is freely accessible outside services.18
- Advent Sundays: The Sundays of Advent in 2026 are 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December; on these days sightseeing is usually possible only in the afternoon.18
- South Tower and Cathedral Treasury: The tower is open from November to February 09:00–16:00, the Treasury 10:00–18:00; both are closed on 24, 25 and 31 December. Last admission to the tower is half an hour before closing, so 15:30 in winter.18,
20, 21 - Tickets: Online booking is possible at most three months in advance.8
- Christmas 2026: According to the Cathedral Chapter, Archbishop Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki will celebrate Midnight Mass (Christmette) on Thursday 24 December at 24:00 and the Pontifical Mass for Christmas Day on Friday 25 December at 10:00. Still within the market period, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday 8 December, with a service at 18:30 (as of 8 November 2026). Before Christmas there are special times for confession, which the Cathedral Chapter lists in its service calendar.19
Still open (checked on 8 November 2026): Whether there are further Masses on Christmas Eve and over the Christmas holidays 2026 is shown in the service calendar on koelner-dom.de. The Cathedral Chapter does not say whether the sightseeing hours for church holidays (13:30–16:30) apply on 8 December; if you are coming that day, check beforehand. How crowded the cathedral is in Advent and how long you may have to wait is not stated by the Cathedral Chapter.
Our recommendation: Visit the cathedral on a weekday morning and walk round the market afterwards. Reason: Sightseeing usually starts at 10:00, while the market opens at 11:00 on weekdays and at 10:00 on Saturdays; on Sundays sightseeing is limited to the afternoon anyway. Whether mornings really are quieter is something we have not measured.18,
