Visiting the cathedral with children
Information as of 8 November 2026. The pages of the Cathedral Chapter (koelner-dom.de) and of the DOMFORUM (domfuehrungen-koeln.de) are binding.
Children up to and including age 13 go free at Cologne Cathedral – for sightseeing, on the South Tower and in the Cathedral Treasury. Pupils aged 14 and over pay the reduced price. Adults need a ticket of their own. Children need one too: according to the ticket shop, free tickets are issued “in conjunction with an official photo ID”; which ID children should show is not stated by the Cathedral Chapter (checked on 8 November 2026) – if in doubt, ask beforehand.1,
| What | Children | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sightseeing, tower, Treasury | free up to and including age 13 (free ticket), reduced from 14 (pupils) | prices for adults: Plan your visit |
| South Tower | with their parents if the child can manage the 533 steps alone; on their own from age 12 | no lift, no pushchair parking |
| Children’s tour “Dom für Spürnasen” | for ages 6 to 13 | public tour on Sundays at 14:30, 60 minutes |
| Roof, excavations, bells, night tour | only from age 16 | no exceptions, not even with parents |
Rules that affect children
The cathedral’s house rules (Domordnung) apply: parents and accompanying adults are responsible for supervising children, and everyone refrains from talking loudly and running around. According to the house rules, the cathedral is above all a house of prayer and worship.6
- Food and drink only outside.6
- Balloons, confetti and streamers are banned throughout the cathedral.6
- Clothing: shoulders and upper body covered, skirts and trousers at least to mid-thigh – this applies to all visitors.6
- Luggage: only small bags and daypacks, slightly smaller still on the tower; details under Luggage.6,
2 - Bring a jacket: the cathedral is neither heated nor cooled.7
Pushchairs: the house rules admit wheelchairs, rollators and marked walking aids; “other wheeled vehicles” must stay outside. They do not say explicitly whether this includes pushchairs (checked on 8 November 2026). According to the Cathedral Chapter, there is no pushchair parking at the tower ticket desk.6,
Our recommendation for the cathedral interior: with small children, bring a baby carrier or ask the Cathedral Chapter beforehand. Reason: there is no explicit rule for pushchairs, and you cannot leave one at the tower ticket desk. The recommendation does not apply to the tower: the Cathedral Chapter allows children to come along who can manage the steps by themselves; it does not say whether small children may be carried up.
Up the South Tower
Children may climb the tower with their parents if they can manage the 533 steps up to the viewing platform by themselves; without an adult from age 12. There is no lift. The Cathedral Chapter suggests allowing about 30 to 45 minutes for the tower, depending on your pace and the time spent on the platform. Children’s and youth groups must be supervised by their group leaders.2

Children’s tour “Dom für Spürnasen”
The DOMFORUM offers a tour of its own for children aged 6 to 13: 60 minutes, as a public tour always on Sundays at 14:30, in the school holidays sometimes with extra dates. Children learn in a playful way to “read” pictures and symbols – how the cathedral was built, why the coloured windows are special and what lies behind the shrine of the Three Kings. The name means roughly “cathedral for little sleuths”.4
- Who comes along: younger children go free, older children pay the adult price; at most two adults per booking. Children below primary-school age do not count as participants and do not receive headphones for the guiding system; if you want them to, the DOMFORUM says you must buy a reduced ticket for them.4,
5 - Language: the DOMFORUM does not say in which language the children’s tour is given (checked on 8 November 2026). According to its English FAQ, public guided tours in English are only available inside the cathedral, and most group tours are also available in English.8
- Sightseeing ticket: the tour ticket is only valid together with a sightseeing ticket for the cathedral – free for children up to 13, adults pay. Without a sightseeing ticket you cannot take part.4,
1 - Booking: online at domfuehrungen-koeln.de or at the DOMFORUM; tickets are currently on sale for the rest of the year.4
Groups and school classes: for children’s groups and school classes there are group tours (60 minutes, at most 20 children with one to five accompanying adults, book at least 14 days ahead), and for young people and school classes a separate tour that the DOMFORUM offers only for groups. From school year 5, the guiding system with headphones is compulsory on interior tours.4,
Family events at the DOMFORUM
Opposite the main portal is the DOMFORUM, the cathedral’s visitor centre; it regularly invites families to theatre, magic, fairy tales, music or film. According to the DOMFORUM, the series “Spielplatz DOMFORUM” and “Familienfilm um Fünf” are free of charge; the events are described in the leaflet “Familienzeit im DOMFORUM”.11,
Baby changing and toilets
DB lists a baby-changing table in the family cubicle of the toilets in Cologne Central Station, on the ground floor at the entrance via the C and E passages (open around the clock, €1.50). It is the nearest documented baby-changing table (DB page dated 2 July 2024). Right by the cathedral is the City of Cologne’s “Toilette Dom” on the south side of the Domkloster (Domkloster 4, daily 08:00–21:00, €0.50); DB does not list a baby-changing table there. The Cathedral Chapter mentions no toilets inside the cathedral.13 More on toilets near the cathedral: Accessible visit.
What children can discover in the cathedral
Three things are easy to show even without a tour: the Shrine of the Three Kings behind the high altar, the south transept window made of more than 11,000 coloured squares and – outside, in front of the Petersportal (St Peter’s Portal) – the bronze model of the whole cathedral. What lies behind them is explained on Highlights and Accessible visit. How heavy the largest bell is, you will find in Facts and figures.14,
